Cardiff Bay line closed for seven days: buses and rail ticket arrangements

Passengers travelling to Cardiff Bay can use their rail tickets on Cardiff Bus Baycar service 6 during a seven-day railway closure, Herald.Wales reports.

Trains between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Bay are suspended from Saturday 24 October to Friday 30 October while Transport for Wales carries out South Wales Metro upgrade work.

Which buses to use

Baycar service 6 links the city centre with Cardiff Bay via Lloyd George Avenue. It will accept rail tickets all day throughout the closure.

Outside Baycar’s operating hours, early-morning and late-night rail replacement buses will connect Cardiff Central, Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Bay.

Passengers are advised to leave extra time, as replacement services could be busier than normal. Before travelling, check TfW’s planned engineering works updates and the Baycar service 6 timetable.

Track work and other rail changes

Engineers will lay new track and undertake related infrastructure work to help enable more frequent Bay line services. The scheme is part of the Cardiff Bay Line Transformation within the wider South Wales Metro programme.

TfW is constructing a two-platform station in Butetown. Cardiff Bay station is also getting an additional platform, improved signs and passenger information systems. Extra track will support higher frequencies and future tram-train services.

Other changes around Cardiff Queen Street run from Saturday 24 October to Friday 30 October, with some Valleys services reduced or diverted.

A separate closure begins at 10pm on Sunday 25 October and continues through Sunday 1 November. Buses will replace trains linking Cardiff Central with Penarth, Barry, Barry Island and Bridgend via the Vale of Glamorgan line during Network Rail track renewal and maintenance work. Passengers on these routes should check TfW journey updates before setting off.
