Cardiff’s players were asked to show they understood the significance of their Aberfan tribute as they secured a 1-0 victory over Birmingham.

Speaking after the match, Barry-Murphy said the squad’s visit to the community and footage of the disaster had helped players understand what residents had endured, BBC News reports.

Before kick-off, supporters of both clubs observed a minute’s silence. Barry-Murphy said the result could never have been guaranteed, but the team’s approach mattered: “On such a poignant day, it’s very important that we played the way we did.”

The visit took place 24 hours before the 60th anniversary commemorations. Academy coach Dennis Moss joined the group, having helped with the rescue effort as an 18-year-old from Cardiff.

Barry-Murphy described the impact of returning on Moss, who had pulled bodies from the rubble. He also spoke about the emotional difficulty of seeing victims’ gravestones and hearing accounts from people who were there.

The matchday programme’s cover featured the clock recovered from the rubble, its hands stopped at the time of the disaster. Inside, Barry-Murphy wrote about the community’s unity and his wish for the players to demonstrate those same qualities.
